10 Wood Fired Bottles
For the third of my themed online exhibitions I have picked out ten wood fired bottles.
When I began working with the wood kiln wanted a clay body that would give me a richly coloured surface without the use of slips or glaze. I looked at the pots from Shigiraki in Japan and I loved the warmth of the flame flashed clay body. I researched the chemical analyses of the Shigiraki clays and I set about creating a clay body from English materials that fires to the reds and oranges that I liked so much. I prefer to allow the flame and vapour of the wood kiln to have its say rather than cover pots with glazes…having said that, those glazes that I use in the wood kiln tend to be simple ash glazes.
All of these bottles could be used as bud vases…they are water tight…but could equally be used for Sake or any other alcoholic beverage of your choice.

Wood fired bottle with my pine ash glaze over the shoulder. The white spots that you can see is feldspar in the clay body. The feldspar nodules melt in the white heat of the kiln and form pearly white dots on the surface of the clay. 5 3/4 inches tall.

A wood fired bottle with Nuka glaze. This one is probably my favourite of the selection. I think the proportions within the form have worked and the glaze has just the right amount of movement. 5 1/4 inches tall.

Wood fired bottle with Nuka glaze and lugs. The effects of vapour passing through the kiln can be seen in the blushes of colour on the side of this piece. 5 1/2 inches tall.

Wood fired bottle with Pine ash glaze. I particularly like the subtle pinks and oranges toward the shoulder of this bottle and the way that the warmth of the clay body contrasts with the green of the glaze. 5 1/4 inches tall.
