H274 A plate by Shoji Hamada.
Hamada called these plates ‘speciality of the house’. Tenmoku with kaki glaze trailed over. Hamada became a master of this trailing technique. He used a ladle and a confident arm….the technique has its roots in the English slipware tradition. Hamada was exposed to slipware during his time in St Ives during the 1920’s.
The glazes on this particular plate have fired very well…a deeply black tenmoku and a rich, chestnut red kaki provide an amazing contrast.
9.75 inches diameter.
