H277    A set of 23 dishes by Shoji Hamada.

A very rare and early set of dishes by Shoji Hamada. Dated to around 1935 these dishes come in a custom made wooden box with a compartment for each pair of dishes and signed and sealed by Shoji Hamada.

Decorated with cobalt pigment and then, in a subsequent firing, red onglaze enamel.

I have never seen a set quite like this. The number of pieces is quite extraordinary. One small bowl is missing but there are 12 larger dishes and 11 smaller ones. They would have been used for rice possibly and the smaller dish for sauce or pickle.

5.5 inches and 3.1 inches diameter.
