HJ136 A Tall bottle by Hamada Shoji.
A tall bottle by Hamada Shoji. Tenmoku glaze with trailed design in Nuka glaze. Paddled pattern.
This is an piece from the first half of Hamada’s career. The clay body is darker than later pots and I have seen this clay colour on a number of other earlier pieces. The trimming of the foot is absolutely in Hamada’s hand and the form is one that is well documented. One interesting thing to notice is the way that the diameter of the lip comes to the point where it would meet the curve of the body of the pot.
I have illustrated a yunomi with essentially the same motif but this time in iron on a hakeme background.
