HJ157 An Ash Tray by Hamada Shoji.
From the days, probably the early 60’s…. when smoking wasn’t frowned upon and was actually very common not just amongst potters but on screen with film stars, TV actors, pop stars and politicians. Bernard Leach was seldom without a cigarette….I have never seen a photograph of Hamada smoking though.
So, forget about it being an ash tray….think of it as a beautiful object decorated in typical Hamada fashion with his iconic straw motif in wax and Kaki glaze.
5.75 inches across.
