HJ63    A set of stacking boxes by Hamada Shoji.

A rare and rather exquisite set of stacking boxes by Hamada Shoji.  Poured glazes on an unglazed background.

This combination of glaze against a dryer background was a technique Hamada used on a great many pots….plates, boxes, chawan and bottles. The background is an ochre slip. The pouring, very much influenced by English slipware patterns and the potters of Okinawa, is in Nuka and Tenmoku. This pouring and trailing was Hamada’s forte and this piece is a very strong example of the technique….bold,  sure and carried out by a well practiced hand.
