Faceting a large
bottle at a workshop in Alexandria VA. U.S.A
I have conducted many workshops for potters
both in the U.K.and overseas. For sixteen years
I opened my own workshop here in Wales for four
weeks each summer to students from around
the world. In 1997 I spent three months in S. Korea
teaching at Chungnam University in Taejon where
I built a salt kiln with third year students. By
invitation of the British Council I spent a week in
Cape Town, South Africa in 1996 working with
Township people and I have been a guest demonstrator
at Potters festivals in Malta, Israel and at the International Ceramics
Festival in Aberystwyth. In 2001 I was a panellist at
NCECA in Charlotte, North Carolina. In 2009 I was at the North
Carolina Potters Conference in Ashboro and later in the same year
addressed the World Ceramic Symposium in Ichon, S. Korea.
Here is a short clip of me demonstrating at the
North Carolina Potter’s Conference in March 2009.
With thanks to Simon Leach.
In 1993 and then again in 1995, I visited Ethiopia with the charity
‘Project Ploughshare’. Our purpose was to create a pottery that
would provide employment for local women. This we did and the
pottery continues to flourish employing 25 ladies thus providing
support for themselves and their children.
Many of the workshops and lectures that I have
had the pleasure to be asked to do have been in the U.S.A. and
Canada. So far, I have worked in, amongst other places, Dallas,
Houston, Seattle, Vancouver, Boston, Washington DC, Frederick MD.
West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, New Hampshire, New York State and
New York itself.

In September of 2002 I took part in an international workshop
with, amongst others, Janet Mansfield and Paul Soldner in Ichon S.
Korea at the World Ceramic Center. I shall be back there in April of
2009 to address the Symposium on the Environmental Concerns of Salt
Glazing. In March of 2009 I will be one of three guest demonstrators
at The North Carolina Potters Conference in Ashboro, NC.
I am very happy to consider workshop invitations from
anywhere. A two-day throwing demonstration with either one or two
slide talks can be tailored to suit specific needs. I have taken
longer sessions, particularly regarding kiln building or hands on
clay work.
A two or three day ‘Glazes from Local Materials’ workshop has
also proved very successful and again, this could be extended to
allow for a more thorough investigation. If you have a clay facility
and would be interested in my leading a workshop for your group then
please email
me or telephone and we can discuss your requirements. All of our
details are on the Contact page.
The following are a few snapshots taken at various
workshops, exhibitions and events I have been involved with both in
the UK and in the USA.
