H173    A jar by Hamada Shoji.

This jar by Hamada Shoji is possibly the most impressive and iconic piece I have ever offered.

The Mashiko Kaki glaze so synonymous with Hamada and the very typical wax resist decoration creates a piece of work that entirely encapsulates Hamada’s style. Hamada made a great many pots that carry a variety of glazes and decorations…that was his genius. But the Kaki glaze with a wax resist pattern remains, for many people, the archetypal Hamada decoration.

This piece is an imposing work and one that I can present as a superb example from Hamada’s kiln.

10.2 inches tall.
