HJ143   A large dish by Hamada Shoji.

A large dish by Hamada Shoji.  Wax resist design with a kaki glaze.  Hamada’s iconic broken straw motif.

Written on the underneath of this bowl in marker pen which is easily wiped away if desired is the following information……

Gift made by Hamada Shoji and presented at Hamada’s home in Mashiko.  Dec  1972  .

A quite imposing and substantial piece and an amazing gift to the lucky recipient. It was a habit of Hamada, and later Shimaoka, to give pieces to visitors. I knew Shimaokasan a little…visited four or five times and each time I was given a piece of work…..he was a lovely man…full of life and humour.

12.5 inches diameter.
