S59    Pair of Yunomi by Tatsuzo Shimaoka.

Shimaoka’s work was influenced somewhat by his teacher and mentor, Hamada…by the fact that his father was a rope maker hence the rope impressed decorations and by the Korean Bunchong of the 15th and 16th centuries where white slip was used against a dark clay body. Here, Shimaoka has impressed and incised a pattern into the clay and then inlaid white slip into the hollows. The pattern is then carefully revealed by scraping away the surplus white slip.

An unusual and rare pattern that works visually so well

Largest 4 inches tall.
